Adopting Large Language Models to Automated System Integration
Modern enterprise computing systems integrate numerous subsystems to resolve a common task by yielding emergent behavior. A widespread approach is using services implemented with Web technologies like REST or OpenAPI, which offer an interaction mechanism and service documentation standard, respectively. Each service represents a specific business functionality, allowing encapsulation and easier maintenance. Despite the reduced maintenance costs on an individual service level, increased integration complexity arises. Consequently, automated service composition approaches have arisen to mitigate this issue. Nevertheless, these approaches have not achieved high acceptance in practice due to their reliance on complex formal modeling. Within this Ph.D. thesis, we analyze the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) to automatically integrate the services based on a natural language input. The result is a reusable service composition, e.g., as program code. While not always generating entirely correct results, the result can still be helpful by providing integration engineers with a close approximation of a suitable solution, which requires little effort to become operational. Our research involves (i) introducing a software architecture for automated service composition using LLMs, (ii) analyzing Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for service discovery, (iii) proposing a novel natural language query-based benchmark for service discovery, and (iv) extending the benchmark to complete service composition scenarios. We have presented our software architecture as Compositio Prompto, the analysis of RAG for service discovery, and submitted a proposal for the service discovery benchmark. Open topics are primarily the extension of the service discovery benchmark to service composition scenarios and the improvements of the service composition generation, e.g., using fine-tuning or LLM agents.
Initial Steps in Integrating Large Reasoning and Action Models for Service Composition

Service composition remains a central challenge in building adaptive and intelligent software systems, often constrained by limited reasoning capabilities or brittle execution mechanisms. This paper explores the integration of two emerging paradigms enabled by large language models: Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) and Large Action Models (LAMs). We argue that LRMs address the challenges of semantic reasoning and ecosystem complexity while LAMs excel in dynamic action execution and system interoperability. However, each paradigm has complementary limitations - LRMs lack grounded action capabilities, and LAMs often struggle with deep reasoning. We propose an integrated LRM-LAM architectural framework as a promising direction for advancing automated service composition. Such a system can reason about service requirements and constraints while dynamically executing workflows, thus bridging the gap between intention and execution. This integration has the potential to transform service composition into a fully automated, user-friendly process driven by high-level natural language intent.

Advanced System Integration: Analyzing OpenAPI Chunking for Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Integrating multiple (sub-)systems is essential to create advanced Information Systems (ISs). Difficulties mainly arise when integrating dynamic environments across the IS lifecycle. A traditional approach is a registry that provides the API documentation of the systems' endpoints. Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown to be capable of automatically creating system integrations (e.g., as service composition) based on this documentation but require concise input due to input token limitations, especially regarding comprehensive API descriptions. Currently, it is unknown how best to preprocess these API descriptions. Within this work, we (i) analyze the usage of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) for endpoint discovery and the chunking, i.e., preprocessing, of OpenAPIs to reduce the input token length while preserving the most relevant information. To further reduce the input token length for the composition prompt and improve endpoint retrieval, we propose (ii) a Discovery Agent that only receives a summary of the most relevant endpoints and retrieves details on demand. We evaluate RAG for endpoint discovery using the RestBench benchmark, first, for the different chunking possibilities and parameters measuring the endpoint retrieval recall, precision, and F1 score. Then, we assess the Discovery Agent using the same test set. With our prototype, we demonstrate how to successfully employ RAG for endpoint discovery to reduce the token count. While revealing high values for recall, precision, and F1, further research is necessary to retrieve all requisite endpoints. Our experiments show that for preprocessing, LLM-based and format-specific approaches outperform na\"ive chunking methods. Relying on an agent further enhances these results as the agent splits the tasks into multiple fine granular subtasks, improving the overall RAG performance in the token count, precision, and F1 score.

Review of Cloud Service Composition for Intelligent Manufacturing

Intelligent manufacturing is a new model that uses advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency and quality of manufacturing production. As an important support to promote the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, cloud service optimization has received the attention of researchers. In recent years, remarkable research results have been achieved in this field. For the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing platforms, in this paper we summarize the process of cloud service optimization for intelligent manufacturing. Further, to address the problems of dispersed optimization indicators and nonuniform/unstandardized definitions in the existing research, 11 optimization indicators that take into account three-party participant subjects are defined from the urgent requirements of the sustainable development of intelligent manufacturing platforms. Next, service optimization algorithms are classified into two categories, heuristic and reinforcement learning. After comparing the two categories, the current key techniques of service optimization are targeted. Finally, research hotspots and future research trends of service optimization are summarized.

Reactive Composition of UAV Delivery Services in Urban Environments

We propose a novel failure-aware reactive UAV delivery service composition framework. A skyway network infrastructure is presented for the effective provisioning of services in urban areas. We present a formal drone delivery service model and a system architecture for reactive drone delivery services. We develop radius-based, cell density-based, and two-phased algorithms to reduce the search space and perform reactive service compositions when a service failure occurs. We conduct a set of experiments with a real drone dataset to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Composition of Nondeterministic and Stochastic Services for LTLf Task Specifications

In this paper, we study the composition of services so as to obtain runs satisfying a task specification in Linear Temporal Logic on finite traces (LTLf). We study the problem in the case services are nondeterministic and the LTLf specification can be exactly met, and in the case services are stochastic, where we are interested in maximizing the probability of satisfaction of the LTLf specification and, simultaneously, minimizing the utilization cost of the services. To do so, we combine techniques from LTLf synthesis, service composition \`a la Roman Model, reactive synthesis, and bi-objective lexicographic optimization on MDPs. This framework has several interesting applications, including Smart Manufacturing and Digital Twins.

Service Composition in the ChatGPT Era

ChatGPT recently attracted vast attention in and outside the research community for its conversational abilities that mimic human ones exceptionally well. At the heart of systems like ChatGPT are Large Language Models (LLM). These models, rooted in deep neural networks, have the ability to predict the next textual token in a series of tokens based on statistical occurrences in extremely large data sets [1]. When the models are sufficiently big and well-tuned, one observes the "unreasonable effectiveness of data" [2] in how the system generates perfectly intelligible and believable sentences. Such ability to have human-like conversations with a software system is both stunning for the quality of the conversation and mind-blowing in terms of the potential impact on society and the job market in particular [3, 4].

GAP2WSS: A Genetic Algorithm based on the Pareto Principle for Web Service Selection

This paper presents a genetic algorithm by adopting the Pareto principle that is called GAP2WSS for selecting a Web service for each task of a composite Web service from a pool of candidate Web services. In contrast to the existing approaches, all global QoS constraints, interservice constraints, and transactional constraints are considered simultaneously. At first, all candidate Web services are scored and ranked per each task using the proposed mechanism. Then, the top 20 percent of the candidate Web services of each task are considered as the candidate Web services of the corresponding task to reduce the problem search space. Finally, the Web service selection problem is solved by focusing only on these 20 percent candidate Web services of each task using a genetic algorithm. Empirical studies demonstrate this approach leads to a higher efficiency and efficacy as compared with the case that all the candidate Web services are considered in solving the problem.

D3BA: A Tool for Optimizing Business Processes Using Non-Deterministic Planning

This paper builds upon recent work in the declarative design of dialogue agents and proposes an exciting new tool -- D3BA -- Declarative Design for Digital Business Automation, built to optimize business processes using the power of AI planning. The tool provides a powerful framework to build, optimize, and maintain complex business processes and optimize them by composing with services that automate one or more subtasks. We illustrate salient features of this composition technique, compare with other philosophies of composition, and highlight exciting opportunities for research in this emerging field of business process automation.

Memetic EDA-Based Approaches to Comprehensive Quality-Aware Automated Semantic Web Service Composition

Comprehensive quality-aware automated semantic web service composition is an NP-hard problem, where service composition workflows are unknown, and comprehensive quality, i.e., Quality of services (QoS) and Quality of semantic matchmaking (QoSM) are simultaneously optimized. The objective of this problem is to find a solution with optimized or near-optimized overall QoS and QoSM within polynomial time over a service request. In this paper, we proposed novel memetic EDA-based approaches to tackle this problem. The proposed method investigates the effectiveness of several neighborhood structures of composite services by proposing domain-dependent local search operators. Apart from that, a joint strategy of the local search procedure is proposed to integrate with a modified EDA to reduce the overall computation time of our memetic approach. To better demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach, we create a more challenging, augmented version of the service composition benchmark based on WSC-08 \cite{bansal2008wsc} and WSC-09 \cite{kona2009wsc}. Experimental results on this benchmark show that one of our proposed memetic EDA-based approach (i.e., MEEDA-LOP) significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms.
